RESUMO

For the first time, the sequential combination of UVC-LED (276 nm) and photo-Fenton/UVA-LED (376 nm) process has been assessed in continuous flow mode for wastewater reclamation according to the new European Regulation for reuse in agricultural irrigation (EU 2020/741). The results show that it is possible to obtain water quality class B (Escherichia coli ≤ 100 CFU/100 mL) by UVC-LED irradiation alone, operating the system with a hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 6.5 min and liquid depth of 5 cm in the case of secondary effluents with low Escherichia coli load (8.102-3.1.103 CFU/100 mL). As for high bacteria concentrations (1.2-4.2.104 CFU/100 mL), HRTs longer than 30 min are required. The bacterial load has not influenced decontamination, removing 18 ± 4 % of microcontaminants. Coupling the UVC (30-min HRT and 5.0 cm liquid depth) and the UVA/photo-Fenton (60-min and 15-cm liquid depth) systems allows 58 ± 4 % of real organic microcontaminants to be removed, in addition to achieving water quality class B.

RESUMO

Nowadays, the increased agro-industrial activities and the inability of traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to eliminate recalcitrant organic contaminants are raising a potential worldwide risk for the environment. Among the various advanced water treatment technologies that are lately proposed for addressing this challenge, the development and optimization of an innovative hybrid photocatalytic nanofiltration reactor (PNFR) prototype emerges as a prominent solution that achieves synergistic beneficial effects between the photocatalytic degradation activity and size exclusion capacity for micropollutant molecules. Both these features can be contemporarily endued to a multitude of membrane monoliths. The physicochemical and the photoinduced decontamination properties of the titania materials were firstly determined in the powder form, and subsequently, the structural and morphological characterization of the obtained titania-modified membrane monoliths were accomplished. The PNFR unit can operate at high water recovery and low pressures, exhibiting promising removal efficiencies against Acetamiprid (ACT) and Thiabendazole (TBZ) pesticides and achieving the recycling of 15 m3/day of real agro-wastewater. The obtained results are very encouraging, demonstrating the integration of titania photocatalysts in a photocatalytic membrane reactor as a feasible technological solution for the purification of agricultural wastewater.

RESUMO

Coupling of UV-C irradiation to different peroxides (H2O2, S2O82- and HSO5-) has great potential to degrade persistent organic compounds due to the formation of HO• or SO4•- species. However, an in-depth comparison between the performance of different UV-C/peroxide processes as a function of (i) target compound degradation, (ii) generated transformation products and (iii) lethal/sub lethal toxicity effects has not yet been performed. To this end a comparison study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of different UV-C/peroxide processes using the herbicide tebuthiuron (100 or 500 µg L-1) as a model pollutant. TBH degradation experiments were performed at lab-scale in real municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent and distilled water. Faster degradation occurred by increasing peroxide concentration from 735 to 2206 µmol L-1 in the municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent, mainly for S2O82-. Experiments performed in the presence of peroxide trapping agents - HO• and SO4•- (methoxibenzene) or HO• (2-propanol) - revealed that oxidation in the UV-C/S2O82- system occurs mainly through SO4•-. Lower toxicity for the MWWTP effluent was obtained after oxidative treatments using hydrogen peroxide or monopersulfate as oxidants which react mainly through HO• radicals. Two mechanistic pathways were proposed for tebuthiuron degradation: (i) hydrogen abstraction by HO• (H2O2 and HSO5-) and (ii) electron transfer by SO4•- (S2O82-). In addition, one unprecedented transformation product was identified. In conclusion, results emphasize the relevance of comparing the degradation of toxic compounds in the presence of different peroxide sources and matrices and simultaneouly evaluating responses chemical and biological endpoints.

RESUMO

Benzophenone-3, fipronil and propylparaben are micropollutants that are potential threats to ecosystems and have been detected in aquatic environments. However, studies involving the investigation of new technologies aiming at their elimination from these matrices, such as advanced oxidation processes, remain scarce. In this study, different iron complexes (FeCit, FeEDTA, FeEDDS and FeNTA) were evaluated for the degradation of a mixture of these micropollutants (100 µg L−1 each) spiked in municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) effluent at pH 6.9 by solar photo-Fenton. Operational parameters (iron and H2O2 concentration and Fe/L molar ratio) were optimized for each complex. Degradation efficiencies improved significantly by increasing the concentration of iron complexes (1:1 Fe/L) from 12.5 to 100 µmol L−1 for FeEDDS, FeEDTA and FeNTA. The maximum degradation reached with FeCit for all iron concentrations was limited to 30%. Different Fe/L molar ratios were required to maximize the degradation efficiency for each ligand: 1:1 for FeNTA and FeEDTA, 1:3 for FeEDDS and 1:5 for FeCit. Considering the best Fe/L molar ratios, higher degradation rates were reached using 5.9 mmol L−1 H2O2 for FeNTA and FeEDTA compared to 1.5 and 2.9 mmol L−1 H2O2 for FeEDDS and FeCit, respectively. Acute toxicity to Canton S. strain D. melanogaster flies reduced significantly after treatment for all iron complexes, indicating the formation of low-toxicity by-products. FeNTA was considered the best iron complex source in terms of the kinetic constant (0.10 > 0.063 > 0.051 > 0.036 min−1 for FeCit, FeNTA, FeEDTA and FeEDDS, respectively), organic carbon input and cost-benefit (USD 327 m−3 > USD 20 m−3 > USD 16 m−3 > USD 13 m−3 for FeEDDS, FeCit, FeEDTA and FeNTA, respectively) when compared to the other tested complexes.

RESUMO

"Ensure access to water for all", states Goal 6 of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. This worldwide challenge requires identifying the best water disinfection method for each scenario. Traditional methods have limitations, which include low effectiveness towards certain pathogens and the formation of disinfection byproducts. Solar-driven methods, such as solar water disinfection (SODIS) or solar photocatalysis, are novel, effective, and financially and environmentally sustainable alternatives. We have conducted a critical study of publications in the field of water disinfection using solar energy and, hereby, present the first bibliometric analysis of scientific literature from Elsevier's Scopus database within the last 20 years. Results show that in this area of growing interest USA, Spain, and China are the most productive countries in terms of publishing, yet Europe hosts the most highly recognized research groups, i.e., Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, and UK. We have also reviewed the journals in which researchers mostly publish and, using a systematic approach to determine the actual research trends and gaps, we have analyzed the capacity of these publications to answer key research questions, pinpointing six clusters of keywords in relation to the main research challenges, open areas, and new applications that lie ahead. Most publications focused on SODIS and photocatalytic nanomaterials, while a limited number focused on ensuring adequate water disinfection levels, testing regulated microbial indicators and emerging pathogens, and real-world applications, which include complex matrices, large scale processes, and exhaustive cost evaluation.

RESUMO

In this work, the activated persulfate oxidation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) using a low-grade titanium ore under sunlight or simulated sunlight were conducted to analyze the CIP degradation efficiency and to identify the transformation products (TPs) generated during oxidation under both types of irradiation sources by using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS). All advance oxidation process experiments were performed in a 2700-mL raceway reactor at a pH value of ~ 6.5 and an initial CIP concentration of 1 mg/L, during 90 min of reaction time. The control experiments carried out under simulated sunlight achieved a 97.7 ± 0.6% degradation efficiency, using 385 W/m2 of irradiation with an average temperature increase of 11.7 ± 0.6 °C. While, the experiments under sunlight reached a 91.2 ± 1.3% degradation efficiency, under an average irradiation value of 19.2 ± 0.3 W/m2 in October-November 2019 at hours between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm with an average temperature increase of 1.4 ± 0.8 °C. Mass spectrometry results indicated that 14 of the 108 possible TPs reported in the literature were detected. The calculated exact mass, measured accurate mass, and its characteristic diagnostic fragment ions were listed, and two new TPs were tentative identified. The TP generation analysis showed that some specific compounds were detected in different time intervals with kinetic variations depending on the irradiation used. Consequently, two CIP degradation pathways were proposed, since the type of irradiation determines the CIP degradation mechanism. Graphical abstract.

RESUMO

Laundry sector consumes a huge amount of water which is usually discharged as wastewater instead of being reused. The application of biological treatment of laundry wastewater coupled with post-treatment utilizing advanced oxidation processes creates a possibility to recycle water to the washing process. However, the investigations on such systems are very limited. In the present work, a novel approach of post-treatment of laundry wastewater utilizing solar photo-Fenton operated at a pilot scale in a compound parabolic collector (CPC) photoreactor is proposed. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a representative of surfactants applied in the laundry system. The effect of feed matrix was investigated using distilled water as a reference matrix and synthetic wastewater simulating the composition of biologically pre-treated laundry wastewater. Different concentrations of H2O2 (50-400 mg/L) and ferrous iron (2.75-10 mg/L) were assayed. For comparison purpose, experiments at neutral pH using ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) as an iron complexing agent were carried out. A high SDS removal efficiency was obtained under both neutral and acidic pH, reaching 89% and 96%, respectively, in just 8 min. However, the remaining organic load originating from EDDS needs application of further post-treatment steps. Therefore, the solar photo-Fenton operated under acidic pH was found to be a more promising approach of post-treatment of laundry wastewater aimed at its reuse.

RESUMO

This work presents, for the first time, a kinetic study of the solar photo-Fenton process at neutral pH mediated by the Fe3+-NTA complex (molar ratio 1: 1) applied to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). To this end, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) secondary effluents were treated in a raceway pond reactor (RPR) at pilot plant scale with 0.1 mM Fe3+-NTA and 0.88 mM H2O2 under average solar UVA irradiance of 35 W/m2. Sulfamethoxazole and imidacloprid, at 50 µg/L of initial concentration each, were selected as model CECs. Up to 40% of the sum of both model CECs was removed from simulated WWTP effluent by the Fe3+-NTA Fenton-like process, and >80% was removed by solar photo-Fenton. The effect of liquid depth in the reactor was evaluated, showing an increase of the treatment capacity from 12 mg CEC/m2·h to 18 mg CEC/m2·h when liquid depth increased from 5 to 15 cm. Afterwards, these results were validated with real WWTP effluents and compared with the results obtained with the Fe3+-EDDS complex under the same operating conditions. The same CEC removal rates were obtained with Fe3+-NTA and Fe3+-EDDS at 5 cm of liquid depth (kinetic constants of 0.110 min-1 and 0.046 min-1 for sulfamethoxazole and imidacloprid, respectively). Conversely, at 15 cm of liquid depth, the degradation rates were lower with Fe3+-NTA (kinetic constants of 0.034 min-1 for sulfamethoxazole and 0.017 min-1 for imidacloprid), whereas with Fe3+-EDDS the values were 0.076 min-1 and 0.047 min-1 for sulfamethoxazole and imidacloprid, respectively. Regarding process cost estimation, the use of NTA as iron chelate for solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH at pilot plant scale resulted very cost-effective (0.13-0.14 €/m3) in comparison with the use of EDDS (0.46-0.48 €/m3) at the two liquid depths tested.

RESUMO

This work discusses the identification of the transformation products (TPs) generated during the photolytic degradation of dextromethorphan (DXM) and its metabolite dextrorphan (DXO), under simulated solar radiation in aqueous solutions (Milli-Q water and river water) in order to determinate its behavior into the aquatic environment. Tentative identification of the TPs was performed by liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/QTOF-MS), following a suspect screening approach. The use of high resolution-mass spectrometry (HRMS) allowed the tentative identification of DXM and DXO photoproducts based on the structure proposed by an in silico software, the accurate mass measurement, the MS/MS fragmentation pattern and the molecular formula finding. A total of 19 TPs were found to match some of the accurate masses included in a suspect list, and they were all tentatively identified by their characteristic MS-MS fragments. Most of the TPs identified showed a minor modified molecular structure like the introduction of hydroxyl groups, or demethylation. The time-evolution of precursors and TPs were monitored throughout the experiments, and degradation kinetics were presented for each analyte. Finally, the occurrence of DXM, DXO, and their tentatively proposed photodegradation TPs was evaluated in both surface and wastewater. In all real matrices, the results showed that the highest concentration was detected for DXO, followed by TP-244 (N-desmethyldextrorphan) and DXM.

RESUMO

Background: Water is a scarce resource and is considered a fundamental pillar of sustainable development. The modern development of society requires more and more drinking water. For this cleaner wastewater, treatments are key factors. Among those that exist, advanced oxidation processes are being researched as one of the sustainable solutions. The main objective of this manuscript is to show the scientific advances in this field. Methods: In this paper, a systematic analysis of all the existing scientific works was carried out to verify the evolution of this line of research. Results: It was observed that the three main countries researching this field are China, Spain, and the USA. Regarding the scientific collaboration between countries, three clusters were detected-one of Spain, one of China and the USA, and one of Italy and France. The publications are grouped around three types of water: industrial, urban, and drinking. Regarding the research, 15 clusters identified from the keywords analyzed the advanced oxidation process (alone or combined with biological oxidation) with the type of wastewater and the target pollutant, removal of which is intended. Finally, the most important scientific communities or clusters detected in terms of the number of published articles were those related to the elimination of pollutants of biological origin, such as bacteria, and of industrial nature, such as pesticides or pharmaceutical products.

RESUMO

This paper deals with the removal of two last-resort antibiotics, namely imipenem and meropenem, in aqueous solutions employing heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 under natural solar radiation at pilot plant scale. It was found that TiO2 photocatalysis is a very efficient technique for the degradation of both compounds in aqueous solutions, albeit it's relatively low quantum efficiency. At the experimental conditions employed in the present work (compound parabolic collectors photoreactor) the optimal TiO2 concentration was about 50 mg L-1. Experiments conducted in various aqueous matrices lead to the conclusion that the method can be applied to real aqueous matrices, such as natural waters and wastewaters. The comparison of TiO2 photocatalysis and natural photolysis showed an important decrease of the accumulated energy required to achieve the complete removal of both antibiotics which, in terms of normalized illumination time (t30W), represented a reduction of 50 min for imipenem and 60 min for meropenem.

RESUMO

In arid Mediterranean countries, such as Tunisia, wastewater often has high salinity, being an obstacle to the elimination of microcontaminants for the reuse of water in agriculture. In this paper, the photo-Fenton process in raceway pond reactors (RPRs) has been successfully applied to a simulated secondary effluent from a Tunisian urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), with high chloride load. A mixture of three contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) was used as model pollutants at 50 µg/L each (one antibiotic, sulfamethoxazole and two pesticides, pyrimicarb and imidacloprid). All the assays were conducted at neutral pH with 0.1 mM Fe(III):EDDS at 1:1 molar ratio. The effect of hydrogen peroxide initial concentration (20, 30, and 90 mg/L) on microcontaminant removal was studied. Different liquid depths (5 and 15 cm) were selected to assess the relationship between the microcontaminant removal and the volumetric rate of photon absorption (VRPA). Although the reaction rate was initially photo-limited, after a short reaction time of 15 min, the final yield (≈ 80% of CEC removal) was limited by the photo-degradation of the Fe(III):EDDS complex and excess H2O2 was found at all concentrations used. Therefore, treatment times below 15 min should be used. The treatment capacity was three times higher when the liquid depth was increased from 5 to 15 cm. For the first time, these results show that the operation of a 15 cm-deep RPR in continuous flow mode would be suitable for large-scale implementation of the solar photo-Fenton process.

RESUMO

Agriculture is considered as the main source of water contamination by pesticides. However, food packaging or processing industries are also recognised as relevant point sources of contamination by these compounds, not yet investigated in depth. The objective of this work has been to improve current knowledge about the presence and concentration of pesticides in the effluent of a food processing industry, as well as to investigate their main transformation products (TPs). An analytical strategy combining target and suspect analysis has been applied to provide an evaluation of the effluents. The methodology involves solid-phase extraction (SPE) of wastewater samples followed by (i) liquid chromatography quadrupole-linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QqLIT-MS/MS) for quantitative target analysis and (ii) liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-HRMS) to identify non-target pesticides and possible TPs. The results revealed the presence of 17 of the target pesticides analysed and 3 additional ones as a result of the suspect screening performed by HRMS. The TPs were investigated for the pesticides found at the highest concentrations: imazalil (7038-19802 ng/L), pyrimethanil (744-9591 ng/L) and thiabendazole (341-926 ng/L). Up to 14 TPs could be tentatively identified, demonstrating the relevance of this type of studies. These data provide a better understanding of the occurrence of pesticides and their TPs in agro-food industrial effluents.

RESUMO

Opioids, both as prescription drugs and abuse substances, have been a hot topic and a focus of discussion in the media for the last few years. Although the literature published shows the occurrence of opioids and some of their metabolites in the aquatic environment, there are scarce data in the application of high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the analysis of these compounds in the environment. The use of HRMS allows increasing the number of opioids that can be studied as well as the detection of unknown opioids, their metabolites and potential transformation products. In this work, a retrospective analysis for the identification of opioids and their metabolites using a curated database was applied to surface water and wastewater samples taken in the state of Minnesota (U.S.) in 2009, which were previously analyzed by liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/TOF-MS) for antidepressants. The database comprised >200 opioids including natural opiates (e.g. morphine and codeine), their semi-synthetic derivatives (e.g. heroin, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, oxycodone, oxymorphone, meperidine and buprenorphine), fully synthetic opioids (e.g. fentanyl, methadone, tramadol, dextromethorphan and propoxyphene), as well as some of their metabolites (e.g. 6-monoacetylcodeine, dextrorphan, EDDP, normorphine and O-desmethyltramadol). Moreover, additional MS-MS experiments were performed to confirm their identification, as well as to recognize fragmentation patterns and diagnostic ions for several opioids. These data provide a better understanding of the historical occurrence of opioids and their metabolites in surface waters impacted by wastewater sources. The concentrations of individual opioids in surface water and wastewater effluent varied from 8.8 (EDDP) to 1640 (tramadol) ngL-1 and from 12 (dihydrocodeine) to 1288 (tramadol) ngL-1, respectively. The opioids with higher overall frequency detections were tramadol, dextromethorphan and its metabolite, dextrorphan.

RESUMO

This paper deals with the photochemical fate of two representative carbapenem antibiotics, namely imipenem and meropenem, in aqueous solutions under solar radiation. The analytical method employed for the determination of the target compounds in various aqueous matrices, such as ultrapure water, municipal wastewater treatment plant effluents, and river water, at environmentally relevant concentrations, was liquid chromatography coupled with hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap-mass spectrometry. The absorption spectra of both compounds were measured in aqueous solutions at pH values from 6 to 8, and both compounds showed a rather strong absorption band centered at about 300 nm, while their molar absorption coefficient was in the order from 9 × 103-104 L mol-1 cm-1. The kinetics of the photochemical degradation of the target compounds was studied in aqueous solutions under natural solar radiation in a solar reactor with compound parabolic collectors. It was found that the photochemical degradation of both compounds at environmentally relevant concentrations follows first order kinetics and the quantum yield was in the order of 10-3 mol einsten-1. Several parameters were studied, such as solution pH, the presence of nitrate ions and humic acids, and the effect of water matrix. In all cases, it was found that the presence of various organic and inorganic constituents in the aqueous matrices do not contribute significantly, either positively or negatively, to the photochemical degradation of both compounds under natural solar radiation. In a final set of photolysis experiments, the effect of the level of irradiance was studied under simulated solar radiation and it was found that the quantum yield for the direct photodegradation of both compounds remained practically constant by changing the incident solar irradiance from 28 to 50 W m-2.

RESUMO

It is well known that wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents usually contain micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals (or their transformation products, TPs) or pesticides, which is a major issue when evaluating their possible reuse (e.g. for irrigation in agriculture). In search for an improved accuracy and simplicity, methods based on the direct injection of the sample (DI) represent a recent trend taking advantage of the increasing sensitivity of new mass spectrometry (MS) instruments. Thus, the present study shows the development and validation of a DI-based method by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole-linear ion trap analyser (UHPLC-QqLIT-MS/MS). The proposed method was applied to the monitoring of 115 organic microcontaminants (including pharmaceuticals, TPs and pesticides) at the ngL-1/µgL-1 level in wastewater effluents from urban WWTPs. Sample pre-treatment was reduced to acetonitrile addition and filtration of the mixture previous to LC-MS analysis. Total analysis time was <15min. A subsequent validation protocol was carried out in treated WW (TWW), following indications of SANTE and Eurachem Guidelines. Linearity and matrix effect were evaluated in the range of 10-1000ngL-1. 70% of the analytes showed a moderate matrix effect (≤25%). Trueness (expressed as recovery) and precision (calculated as relative standard deviation, RSD) were evaluated at four concentration levels (20, 50, 500 and 1000ngL-1) in TWW samples. The LODs ranged from 1 to 357ngL-1 and the LOQs from 10 to 500ngL-1. 92% of the compounds showed limits of quantification ≤100ngL-1. In most cases, mean recoveries were in the range 70-120%, and RSD values were ≤20%. The validated method was successfully applied to the analysis of 10 TWW samples, demonstrating the occurrence of 67 target compounds at concentration levels from 26705ngL-1 (4-aminoantipyrine) to 10ngL-1 (tebuconazole and bezafibrate).

RESUMO

In this study, pesticides acetamiprid and thiabendazole and their transformation products (TPs), seven from each pesticide, were successfully monitored during solar photo-Fenton treatment in a real secondary effluent from an agro-food industry spiked with 100µgL(-1) of each pesticide. To this end, a highly sensitive procedure was developed, based on liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to hybrid quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometry (QqLIT-MS). In addition, finding low-cost and operational technology for the application of AOPs would then facilitate their use on a commercial level. Simple and extensive photoreactors such as raceway pond reactors (RPRs) are therefore proposed as an alternative for the application of solar photo-Fenton. Results showed that high degradation could be achieved in a complex water matrix (>99% TBZ and 91% ACTM in 240min) using a 120-L RPR pilot plant as novel technology. The analyses indicated that after the treatment only three TPs from ACTM were still present in the effluent, while the others had been removed. The study showed that the goal of either just removing the parent compounds, or going one step further and removing all the TPs, can significantly change the treatment time, which would affect process costs.

RESUMO

The photo-Fenton process has proven its efficiency in the removal of micropollutants. However, the high costs usually associated with it prevent a spread of this technology. An important factor affecting costs is the kind of photoreactor used, usually tubular with a reflecting surface. Tubular reactors like compound parabolic collectors, CPCs, involve high capital costs. In comparison, the application of less costly reactors such as the extensive raceway ponds (RPRs) would help to spread the use of the photo-Fenton process as tertiary treatment at commercial scale. As far as the authors know, RPRs have never been used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) applications. This work is aimed at studying the applicability of RPRs to remove micropollutants with solar photo-Fenton. For this purpose, a pesticide mixture of commercial acetamiprid (ACTM) and thiabendazole (TBZ) (100µg/L each) was used in simulated secondary effluent. Iron concentration (1, 5.5 and 10mg/L) and liquid depth (5, 10 and 15cm) were studied as process variables. TBZ was removed at the beginning of the treatment (less than 5min), although ACTM removal times were longer (20-40min for the highest iron concentrations). High treatment capacity per surface area was obtained (48mg/hm(2) with 5.5mg Fe/L and 15cm liquid depth), proving the feasibility of using RPRs for micropollutant removal.

RESUMO

The presence of low concentrations of persistent pollutants in waters (µg/L or ng/L), also called micropollutants, brings as a consequence the need to apply advanced oxidation treatments for their removal. The successful application of solar-driven photo-Fenton to treat highly polluted wastewaters (g/L and mg/L of pollutants) has prompted its application to lowly polluted effluents. However, a decrease in contaminant concentration may involve an alteration in the intrinsic process phenomenon, which until now has only been widely studied at the milligram-per-litre level or higher with this process. The aim of this research was to study the combined influence of the operating variable (iron concentration) and the environmental variable (irradiance) and application on the photo-Fenton process at pH2.8 when removing micropollutants. For this purpose, experimentation was carried out at laboratory and pilot plant scales with a biocide mixture of acetamiprid (ACTM), thiabendazole (TBZ) and imazalil (IMZ) (100 µg/L each) as the model pollutant. Results indicated that above 15 WUV/m(2) and a light path length of 5 cm (the most commonly used path for this type of application) iron concentration limited the process and there was irradiance excess under these conditions. On the other hand, and given the circumstances of irradiance excess, a higher light path length (10 cm) was assessed. Results showed that path lengths wider than 5 cm are recommended since more wastewater volume could be treated with a higher process rate per surface unit.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to carry out an economic assessment on a solar photo-Fenton/MBR combined process to treat industrial ecotoxic wastewater. This study focuses on the impact of the contamination present in wastewater, the photochemical oxidation, the use of an MBR as biological process and the plant size on operating and amortization costs. As example of ecotoxic pollutant, a mixture of five commercial pesticides commonly used in the Mediterranean area has been used, ranging from 500 mg/L to 50mg/L, expressed as dissolved organic carbon concentration. The economic evaluation shows that (i) the increase in pollution load does not always involve an increase in photo-Fenton costs because they also depend on organic matter mineralization; (ii) the use of an MBR process permits lower photochemical oxidation requirements than other biological treatments, resulting in approximately 20% photo-Fenton cost reduction for highly polluted wastewater; (iii) when pollution load decreases, the contribution of reactant consumption to the photo-Fenton process costs increase with regard to amortization costs; (iv) 30% total cost reduction can be gained treating higher daily volumes, obtaining competitive costs that vary from 1.1-1.9 €/m(3), depending on the pollution load.
